Leak testing in the production line - Practical approaches for determining the test parameters test pressure and leakage rate

Many products are exposed to a variety of influences during operation. In some cases, this also requires tightness against dirt and moisture. These requirements are described in the definition of IP protection classes, for example.

The IP protection class tests are type tests. In these tests, prototypes are tested in the laboratory for tightness against the ingress of particles. The result is summarised in a test certificate which, strictly speaking, is only valid for the sample tested.

The routine test serves as proof of consistent product and manufacturing quality. In the production of large quantities and in some sectors, it is common for products to be 100% tested for tightness against moisture during production.

The leak test integrated into the production process cannot be carried out under the conditions of laboratory testing. Appropriate specifications (test pressure and leakage rate) must be defined here. The test parameters and the test method are often defined in the specifications. However, this is not always the case, so suitable parameters must be defined that are appropriate to the operating conditions of the product and its area of application. Important aspects of routine testing during production and practical approaches to defining the test parameters are presented.

Table of contents

  • Type tests and routine tests
  • IP protection class and production practice
  • Industrial leak test methods
  • Approaches for selecting the test pressure
  • Approaches for selecting the leakage rate
  • Limitations and practical comments

Target group

This online seminar is aimed at product developers, industrial engineers and quality managers who are interested in methods for determining the test parameters (test pressure and leakage rate) for the industrial leak test process. This seminar is also important for those, who define the specification or evaluate the test parameters for suitability.
