Practical solutions for industrial leak and flow testing

Every testing application has its own requirements in terms of test methods, cycle times, test pressures and integration into the production process. CETA develops and supplies suitable testing technology for a wide range of applications – from manual laboratory and sample testing to fully automated 100% end-of-line inspection.

Our Application Notes present practical solutions and provide insights into the testing technology, test methods and system concepts used.

Solutions for the Packaging Industry

Leak Testing of Large-Volume Containers

Quality control of new and reconditioned IBCs

Large-volume containers such as IBCs and drums present particular challenges for leak testing. Using the overpressure version of the CETATEST LV with its turbo-fill function, IBCs with a volume of approximately 1,000 liters can be tested in just 30 seconds, while the total test time for a 160-liter drum is only 10 seconds. Depending on the test volume, leaks corresponding to hole sizes from approximately 0.07 to 1 mm can be reliably detected. The Application Note also presents a solution for the separate leak testing of outlet taps on reconditioned IBCs using a compact standalone test bench and the vacuum version of the CETATEST LV.

Leak Testing of Flexible Packaging

Combining image processing and leak testing

Flexible packaging such as flow packs, doy packs, spouts and blister packaging places high demands on reliable leak detection. The solution presented combines optical inspection with leak testing, enabling both rapid detection of gross leaks using image processing and artificial intelligence and quantitative evaluation of smaller leaks. Depending on the application, hole sizes down to approximately 10 µm can be detected, while typical sealing defects can also be identified. The Application Note presents both a compact benchtop solution for laboratory and sample testing and an inline concept for automated end-of-line inspection at rates of several hundred parts per minute.

Solutions for the Vehicle Industry

Ensuring the Leak-Tightness of Electronic Control Units

Quality Control in the Production Process

Electronic control units such as power control units and inverters must be reliably protected against the ingress of moisture and dirt, making leak testing an important part of 100% end-of-line inspection. The Application Note presents different test concepts for directly fillable, encapsulated products and products equipped with pressure compensation elements. Using a practical application example, it demonstrates how test volume, test pressure, permissible leakage rate and test times can be coordinated and implemented with a differential pressure leak tester such as the CETATEST 830.

Leak Testing of Encapsulated Systems

Particularities of Leak testing non-fillable Products | Quality control through routine test during the production process

Encapsulated systems such as sensors, actuators, microswitches, relays, cameras and displays often need to be reliably protected against moisture and other environmental influences and are therefore subjected to 100% leak testing during production. Since these products cannot be filled directly with compressed air from the inside, testing is performed using a product-specific test hood. The Application Note describes a two-stage test procedure in which gross leaks are first detected by pneumatically determining the test volume, followed by fine leak measurement based on the pressure gradient caused by leakage. Practical examples show how test pressure, permissible leakage rates and test times can be designed for products ranging from very small components to larger encapsulated systems.
